Never lend money to a friend unless you are willing to lose either the money or the friend. To answer your question: 0. To answer the question you were trying to ask: The maximum would depend a lot on why the money was lent in the first place. If it was for something like lending them some money for lunch to save a visit to the bank then normally around a couple of dollars. If it was lent due to them being in financial difficulty then it's a very different matter, in the past I've written off ~$2,000 in that situation.
