We recently took apart some Chinese clones of our products.

Most of them had a very similar outer case but were then totally different internally.
One of them however, the trickiest to design, was an exact replica. They had x-rayed the circuit board and copied it exactly. A few component changes for cheaper almost equivalents and lower quality mechanical assembly but it was basically our product right down to the details covered by several patents.

The ones which weren't exact clones were using modules from a Canadian company to do the tricky bits.

They may not need to copy but they do because it's cheaper and easier. Making the switch from imitator to market leader is not always an easy thing to do, don't assume that they could do it overnight.
