I find it tiresome how often people judge what others should or shouldn't know based on some preconceived set of criteria.

If you don't have a job that requires that you use sine, cosine, et al, why in the world would one be expected to remember how to use it off the top of one's head?

Should I use the same snarky standard to cast haughty aspersions on the writing and spelling abilities of folks who don't write or spell well? I *could*...I'm a good writer and great speller. But why would I? It doesn't make me any better or worse than anyone else. Doing so would only serve to make me feel smugly superior based solely on criteria that I preselect to make myself look good. And that's not my style.
