...a lot of renters ARE deadbeats, particularly with the real estate market being what it was, the last few years. Credit has been so easy that almost any warm body has been able to get a mortgage.
Even those who have preferred to rent, for various reasons, have decided to buy because the quality of their neighbors have declined so much. And while renting is still a lot cheaper for me than buying, the idiots around me make signing papers on a mortgage VERY tempting...and so the landlords would lose another sterling tenant.
Result, landlords have had to take what they can get, tenant-wise. And since it takes a lot of time/expense to evict, they've taken to getting nasty right at the outset, since most of their tenants "need" to be scared/cajoled into making the rent payment a priority. A lot of professional deadbeats have moved into apartments, knowing they can squeeze 3-6 months rent free living out of each landlord they scam. So they have to pander to the least common denominator. You're getting lumped in with them. It's not fair, but it is what it is. |
