IIRC, the cold war ended without nuclear war, which is what it was designed to do. As such, I'd say it was pretty successful.
The success of the missiles wasn't based on what they *could* do, but what the other side *believed* they could do. Similarly, guns are effective deterrents not because they can actually kill, but because of what we *believe* they could do. That is why an unloaded weapon can be as effective as a loaded weapon, despite not being able to be useful as anything other than a club.
Don't confuse perception with ability.
Also, I did not warp your words. I said that I agreed they were designed for something in particular, and I indicated the change I inserted. I did not say YOU had said that. As such, I could not have warped your words, but I am sorry you misread it that way.
