(well, everything functional) has a purpose. While propelling a small slug of something is how a gun works, the *purpose* of the design is to kill.

A tranquillizer gun *works* in exactly the same way, but the *purpose* is not to kill - quite the reverse. A taser works in a similar way, but again, the purpose is not to kill. I could go on, but I'm hoping you can see my point and think of the many other instances for yourself.
