The truth is a gun is a tool. Nothing more. A car could be used to create violence far more easily than a gun could. As could most construction equipment. Think of the damage a pneumatic air gun could do.
Creating violence merely takes imagination. The most a gun might do is be a tool to the fool with no imagination.
You say that it's a lot easier to stand at a distance and pull the trigger -- This is true to a degree. However, look at most fights. They do not occur at much of a distance. They're usually up close and personal. Assassinations and such are where distance usually comes in, but those are not all that common.
