Hmm, Wikipedia says he makes horror movies . . . by Esteis2007-07-29 04:38:12
Not so much horror in the traditional sense... by Sharku 2007-07-29 05:54:13
...of "here's a bunch of people that get horribly slaughtered by a monster/psychopath". The wikipedia article on body horror is pretty accurate, although very short. Cronenberg combines the visceral imagery with seriously twisted story lines, that constantly have you wonder what's what, like typewriters talking out of their a3es or videotapes being inserted into people's torsos (no I'm not making any of that up).

I'd recommend seeing eXistenZ, it's relatively low key when it comes to guts and gore, but it gives a good idea of the typical Cronenberg style of mindscrewery. Scanners is also a very good movie and low on gore, however the story is pretty straightforward so it doesn't really qualify as a puzzling movie, still highly recommended.

See if you can stomach either of those and then maybe you could work your way towards the middle of his oeuvre. I haven't seen anything more recent than eXistenZ myself, so I can't comment on his later work.
