I saw Mulholland Drive last night, and I'm still piecing together what happened. It has a very non-linear narration, coupled to a 180-degree turn halfway through, and I still haven't put all the pieces in place. (When I say 180 degrees, I mean it. It involved a complete reversal of what I thought was true.)
So, are there any other movies like that? The kind that presents you with a new bit of information half-way through that makes you stop. Whoa. Rehuffle the cards. Where does this fit in? To fit this in, I'll have to rearrange all my puzzle pieces. The kind of movie that you want to watch again from the start, but this time knowing what you didn't know before.
Memento is a well-known one, though I still have to see it. I think Fight Club falls in the same category. Any others?
Oh, and going back to Mulholland Drive: if you have a chance to watch it, do. Quite apart from the captivating and confusing ride, the acting, the scenery, and the motifs are amazing.
(Incidentally: in Mulholland Drive, I've found my highest enjoyable level of fear in a movie. Any scarier than that, and I won't enjoy it. Which is useful to know, although unhappily limiting.)
Anyway, movies which make you puzzle. The kind that still has you thinking after it's finished. D'you know any? |
