| Hm. This may be somewhat depressing. |

When I was five, I had a little sister named Brenda who was about two and a half years old. She died from injuries sustained in an accident in the home. I'm not entirely sure I recall the details accurately, so I won't go into them.
This triggered my father's divorce from my mother; my dad was eventually granted custody when I was 7-8 years old. He remarried to a woman who had 7 kids of her own. They separated soon after that.
I lived in New Jersey with my aunt and uncle and their four daughters (the youngest was 4 years older than I was) for about a year while my dad worked as a cross-country truck driver. Dad got back together with the mother of 7, and he and I moved to Las Vegas to be with her family; the step-siblings were fun, but step-mom became increasingly more abusive over time. After a couple years, I ran away; evil step-mother left; I went back home to dad.
He met somebody new and eventually remarried; new step-mom had 2 daughters close to my age. I got along well with the older one, but the younger didn't like me much.
Eventually I went to college, and while I was there, my father found himself on the receiving end of 3 shots fired at point-blank range. That wasn't an accident.
So because of that one accident, I ended up moving around a lot; I've been part of small families and large families, and I've been an "only child" a few times; I was subject to psychologically crippling abuse at a critical time in my social development; and in general, I've had a very interesting life. But in spite of all that, because I had support from good friends along the way, I think I turned out alright. But I'm still working on the social skills.
And did I mention that the people above that I called "mother and father" were actually the people who adopted me when I was 3 weeks old? I never knew my biological parents. Perhaps their "accident" is the one that set the whole thing in motion. Another significant influence in my life is the fact that I was put up for adoption rather than aborted, but I suspect that was no accident. |
