SRB and EFT sep need to be initiated at precisely the correct time. Orbital insertion vectors are also crucial and thruster firing requires VERY precise timing.

Liftoff itself is actually handled by launch control on the ground. Once the shuttle has cleared the gantry, it's in the hands of the pilot, who may need to compensate for high altitude winds to stay on course. Dropping the SRBs or the EFT over land can be a VERY costly boo-boo.
