o.0 ... ? USB Floppy != USB boot device. by ChUcKAb 2007-07-27 07:00:11
I'm currently wiping some Dell GS270's preparing for them to go to ... salvage (for want of a better word). They were originally purchased withOUT floppy drives.

Well, the wipe program I have is on floppy - and it uses an old copy protection technique that prevents me from making a copy to some other bootable media. Of course, I haven't tried real hard to get a copy program, but, such things are frowned upon in my environment.

So I grab my USB floppy and hook it up intending to use it to boot from.

As these machines have USB booting disabled, I go into the BIOS to enable USB booting. So I attached the USB floppy and turn the machine on and enable USB booting.

It can't find any USB device. ... Huh?
I poke around for a while and finally decide to enable the floppy entry.
*reboot*
It finds the floppy during POST.
I go into the BIOS to enable USB booting and it still tells me that there is no USB device installed.
Okay ...
I check boot order: The floppy is there. So I promote it to the first boot position and reboot.
It boots from the floppy.
...
Why?
