I love the Fiizgerald translation by Masked Ufie 2007-07-27 03:51:21
Have done ever since I found it on my parents' bookshelves when I was about nine years old.

And when Thyself with shining Foot shall pass
Among the Guests Star-scatter'd on the Grass,
And in thy joyous Errand reach the Spot
Where I made one---turn down an empty Glass!

Rendering Japanese haiku into an English 5-7-5 is often very hard work, and rarely satisfactory. I write them in 5-7-5, but enjoy reading the masters when well rendered without the extra syllables or contraints that forcing them into the conventional form imposes. And the nearest in English would, I believe, be 3-5-3 (given that the Japanese version of a syllable isn't the same thing).
