But blood doping only has an effect for a few days by JimK2007-07-25 14:55:36
Here's the specific info from Joe Lindsay I was by merlin 2007-07-25 16:21:47
referring to:

Most doping - at least the really effective stuff - takes place not during the race, but in the 3-8 weeks before. That's when you'd do EPO to boost up your blood and take lots of steroids for recovery so you could continue to train hard. By the time you hit the start line and they start testing in earnest, all the bad stuff is flushed out or present at just below positive-threshold levels, but you still get all the benefit. Every single anti-doping expert I've talked to feels that targeted out-of-competition testing is the single most-effective way to catch cheats and deter doping. And it appears that Rasmussen failed to play by those rules. Three missed tests are the same as one positive, and Chicken was a feather-breadth shy of tripping that wire. It's not fire, but it is smoke.

I can give you a direct link to the info, but I'll have to ID9K it as it's a blog with open comments, and Joe can be somewhat salty himself.
