I've had it happen where I plugged in an IDE drive on a machine with XP installed to a Serial ATA drive, it stopped booting and started complaining about NTLDR missing. Remove the IDE drive, machine starts working again.

Machine was defaulting to trying to boot from an IDE drive first, and there was no option to tell it to boot from SATA first that I could find. ~:|
