The analog part of the modem dies, and it behaves like the line keeps dropping. Usually cheap Winmodems and the like that I've seen do it, but not confined to such. I've seen serviceable hardware-based modems sold at Mal-Wart in the past, but haven't looked lately; is the Wi-Fi card one that has an actual coaxial antenna connector? If so, maybe one of these might help? Just thinking out loud. :)
