| The other part is that the stabilization/rebuilding strategy was not well thought out beforehand. From what I keep hearing (early on, anyway), no one in Washington was paying much attention to the commanders on the ground. Now, Bush keeps saying that the commanders on the ground will determine military strategy, and not Congress.
Fine, but why didn't you let them do that to begin with!
I've heard some former military and intelligence officials saying that this is too little too late. Yes, I hope they're wrong. Yes, I want to see Iraq stabilized, and if they can be free and democratic to boot, all the better. But that goal is not yet certain.
For the people who are sincere, that's the rub. That's why they want to pull out. Yeah, some people are just playing politics, wanting to pull out just to be contrary to Bush and blame him for everything. Some want to pull out because they don't see the prospect of victory for Iraq, and they don't want our soldiers to keep dying for what they see as a lost cause.
Me . . . I'm still trying to grasp any loose, hanging threads of hope I can find that we can help the common people of Iraq build a free, independent, prosperous country. |
