More women than you think have self-esteem issues associated with dating. One in six women in the US is a survivor of sexual assault with 44% of the assaults occuring prior to age 18. More than 70% of the assaults are perpetrated by someone the survivor knows, including significant others. There is a considerable body of research on the psychological outcomes from that including poor self-esteem and the dating behavior described earlier. Depending upon the survey, 25-30% of women report being physically assaulted by a significant other. Add on the self-esteem issues from media images and you have a lovely mess. See also the huge fights that erupt when the question "Do these pants make my behind look big?" is answered "incorrectly." I'm not saying these things excuse poor behavior on a woman's part, but it's reality and it's incredibly damaging. The solution is not to play "bad boy". The solution is to demonstrate that guys aren't all jerks who treat women poorly or like meat. No, it doesn't work all the time, but it seems to me that a healthier approach might be more successful in the long run.
