You start a relationship with someone. During that relationship, ideally, you get to know each other with a certain level of intimacy, you get to feel each other up out, and have time to figure out if you like what you see. During that time is when you would build up a certain level of trust and comfort.
If everything works out, then marriage would be an affirmation of the trust you've already built up, an affirmation of the commitment you've already made to each other, and traditionally (though not so much anymore), an increase in the intimacy of the relationship based on the trust and commitment that have already been established and affirmed.
Otherwise, marriage is like a house without a foundation. |
