Win XP help needed - removing USB device by SoylentGreen2007-07-25 11:51:48
  A while back a UFie posted this tidbit: by kahuana 2007-07-25 12:06:56
It enables the device manager console applet to include non-present devices as "hidden" devices.

Run this and select "Show Hidden Devices" and you might be able to see if there's any lingering cruft.
(Like the now broken USB keyboard driver for your old keyboard)

--8<-- CUT HERE and paste as a .BAT or .CMD file --8<--
@ECHO OFF
SET DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES=1
cd %systemroot%\system32
start compmgmt.msc
--8<-- CUT HERE --8<--
