"Susanna Clarke's enchanting "Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell," with its haunting exploration of history and sexual longing, or Philip Pullman's "His Dark Materials," a dazzling fantasy series that explores philosophical themes (including a scathing assault on organized religion) that make Rowling's little world of good vs. evil look, well, childish.
I found Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell to be a good story but in a very dry and dull style. It may be a good book but it wasn't a fun read.
And the Dark Materials books I though started well but then they didn't turn into a scathing assault on organised religion. They turned into a book and a half of foaming at the mouth ranting against organised religion dressed up as a fantasy story that got more and more ludicrous.
Harry potter may have good people and bad people but there are a few in between and she does indicate that no one is perfect. To then complain that harry potter is too black and white while in the same paragraph compare it to a book where the whole church is automatically evil? Well at least he has a sense of humour.
He complains that people who like harry potter don't like other books which he considers better. Would he rather have them read nothing?
To me this all reads a bit like a modern art critic who complains when the bulk of the population don't think that an old armchair pulled off the dump should be considered art. Most people don't read to appreciate fine writing, they read because they enjoy the story. To many people harry potter is just that, a fun, enjoyable story. |
