poorly maintained (or performanced tuned) diesel engines. A properly maintained and tuned modern diesel engine does not emit black smoke.

Many of the trucks and buses that you see belching black smoke are running higher sulfer diesel, which can also cause nasties, even with a properly maintained engine.

Our Golf is a 2000. It doesn't smell or emit black smoke (when run on the new ULSD gas, which is the only kind that I've seen since January). I get horrible headaches from poorly maintained diesel engines; I would not be able to drive it if it belched black smoke/fumes.
