My German built Passat begs to differ by tran 2007-07-25 09:11:15
2002 VW Passat GLS Wagon,1.8t, manual
Well they are assembled in germany - many components made in Spain - for better or worse - I do not know.
I think the problem mostly is designed obsolesence...
It is the only car I ever owned that:
Needs rear barake rotors replaced every 30K miles
Needs front brake rotors replaced every 60k miles
Needed a Clutch replacement at 70K miles - all other cars I ever owned had clutches last the life of the car ( ~150K+ miles)
Tjhis being my first car with automatric windows - well I had the front lift and control moter need replacement when the window didnt close anymore at 70K miles
Oh yeah, had to have some type of valve replaced as well at 60K miles - but I will take that as "normal" wear and tear...
This year I already put in $3500(US) into this car...
And the timing belt replacement is coming up soon... well that at least is normal to most cars as well, theses days.
My friend had a VW TDI Beetle, similar issues.

The fit and finish and drivabilty is top notch though. Just costs too much to run.
Toyota, Honda and Subaru are my top choices for next replacement
