You get much better real-world performance from the huge torque (nearly double the same-size petrol engine) while using maybe 60% of the fuel. Can you get the Ford Focus? The Mk2 Focus is a great car and the Ford/PSA diesel is a stunner. I drove the 1.6l diesel, and it turned out 45mpg at 90mph. At 60mph it was doing 65mpg. The VW diesels aren't as nice as the Ford, but still pretty good and streets ahead of any comparable-sized petrol engine.
