1)Prefer xhtml, however... if the customer requires broad browser support, html may have to be used if a specific browser/platform is not displaying the content correctly using xhtml standard. No specific flavor is specifically chosen

2)As much as browser support will allow. Again, some browsers do not implement the W3C standard exactly the same. Deviation from the standard may be necessary to make the content look and act exactly the same on all platforms.

It must be understood that no two projects are exactly the same.
Programmers will sometimes have to deviate from standards to deliver exactly what the customer desires and expects.
Certainly, it is a great practice to try to establish and follow standards, but standards are not laws and deviation from them is not a real crime.
