Until about 2002, I couldn't get dsl either and every 56k modem we had would drop connections. Then the phone company updated all the phone lines and installed a new one of those switching stations or whatever. After that, our 56k worked much better, and now we're running 3mb dsl just fine (except for the crappy modem dying a couple times a day). There may be a way to request for the phone company to install new phone lines in your area, or find out if they've been replaced recently or are due to be replaced.
