Everybody has an opinion - and those opinions don't always agree.

So whose opinion should count when it comes to justifying violence? The perpetrator? I think we know what the result of that will be.

The victim? Unless we are talking about someone hopelessly psychopathic, I think we know that opinion as well.

The opinion of the world? Not that easy to ascertain. So where do we look for justification?

IMO we should only look to justification according to rules that apply equally to all. If everyone can agree to a set of rules beforehand, which can then be used to ascertain whether violence is justified or not, then we will have made huge progress.

There will still be the matter of differences in interpretation of the rules, no doubt. But hopefully that will result in much less disagreement than what we see now.
