Thyestean feast in Iraq? by DesertRat662007-07-10 07:23:48

Not talking about leadership, talking about rabble by kelli217 2007-07-10 09:49:45
And if the opponents in the case of King or Gandhi had known that what they were doing was wrong, they wouldn't have been doing it.

What it takes is not to appeal to the shame of those perpetrating the violence -- that doesn't work. What works is to appeal instead to the population base from which the perpetrators operate.

But it's too big a change in mentality; the US could never attain the kind of clarity required to do what's necessary. I mean, look how hard it is to convince *you*, lheggland -- so, much less the rest of the country.

What's necessary:

- Pull out ALL troops from ALL foreign-soil bases. There's only one country in the world that has military bases in the territory of other sovereign nations anymore, and it's the US. The Cold War has been over for 15 years; time to stand down.

- Stop extraordinary rendition and close the Guantanamo Detention Center. Provide equal treatment under domestic and international laws and conventions to everyone, even our enemies. Reintroduce the non-violent interrogation techniques that actually WORK.

- Show exactly what the terrorists are doing. Rebroadcast the graphic execution videos. Publish all their statements. Show the victims. Show our troops coming home in caskets. Show their own innocent bystanders too. Make it well-known and understood how little the terrorists value life. Above all, make it well-known and understood among those in whose name the terrorists *claim* to fight. Again, the purpose is not to shame the terrorists (because they have no shame or else they wouldn't be doing what they're doing), but to shame the people who allow the terrorists to continue to operate from within their midst.

Remember, right after 9/11, for every jihadist celebration, there were just as many expressions of support for the US from peace-loving Muslims around the world. There are more of them by far then there are jihadists.
