let me use this Quote from the article to see if it helps clarify. (** for emphasis are mine)
" For many Iraqis, we have morphed from being invaders to occupiers to members of a tribe. *I* call it the "al Ameriki tribe," or "tribe America."
I've seen this kind of progression in Mosul, out in Anbar and other places, and when I ask our military leaders if they have sensed any shift, many have said, yes, they too sense that Iraqis view us differently. **In the context of sectarian and tribal strife, we are the tribe that people can—more or less and with giant caveats-rely on."**
Also, I think you are reading too much into what I said. I think this is a *step* in the right direction. I have to agree that it is not the total solution but definitely a step along the road that will lead to peace.
Also, you can not change a way of life overnight. They understand and accept the Tribal mentality. It will take many years and a enormous effort for that to change. Until that time it has to be accepted that is the way they see the coalition troops and use it to take further steps towards peace. To try to ignore the tribal aspect would just causes the very strife everyone wants to avoid because they would fight it every step of the way if it were forced upon them.
IMO, One step at a time, slow and steady, will bring peace. Trying to hurry it along will only cause bloodsheed and pain, especially in this situation. |
