    Gandhi by chrisP 2007-07-10 09:18:39
had success with a certain strategy under very special historical circumstances. To found a philosophy of unconditional non-violence on Gandhi is naive and dangerous. Gandhi was well aware that his success was based on forcing the british to use means that would cause outrage in Britain.

Notably, islamic fundamentalists make use of the very same effect by employing totally different means. They know very well that sufficient violence will cause counter violence to an extent that at some point will no longer be supported in most western countries, exactly because "we're supposed to be better than that".

So the problem with the US-led invasion of Iraq is not, inmsho opinion, the use of force per se. Would the coalition forces have intervened for the sole reason of fighting religious fanatics or a cruel despot, they would have my support. But they didn't. Their efforts in Iraq and in fighting Al Qaida are tainted by the whole WMD-desaster, by a history of supporting both the Mujaheddin and Saddam, by a historical incredibility when it comes to "bringing democracy" (anyone remember Allende?) and by constant moving of goalposts with regards to mission goals. Add to that an obvious lack of understanding of what happens in that region and you know why I still say they should have kept out in the first place.

But fighting an incredibly opressive, violent, fanatic, machistic, reactionary movement can very well be the right thing to do. By any means necessary.
