| OK, the fishy smell (if that is indeed a symptom) would be form the catalytic converter(s) end-of-life. That's reasonable. You have to assume the rings are doing their job to a reasonable degree or the car wouldn't start from lack of compression. Same with the valves, and there is a very very short period of time where the pressure differential would allow for that escape path. There is no direct passage back into the "oil pan" except through the PCV system. That is on the intake tract between the block (or valve cover) and the intake manifold. Cats that were blocked badly enough to reach that point would prevent the car from even starting. Think banana in the tailpipe "gag". More likely you have a combination of badly blocked cats causing backpressure and a blocked PCV system. At this point your EGR system is probably all gunked up as well. I don't, however, see the cats as the cause, instead as an effect. Blocked PCV and/or EGR in a car that's burning oil or WAY too much fuel will cause heavy soot. Heavy soot blocks cats. Blocked cats increase backpressure and cause the car to run even worse eventually leading to failure to breathe. Changing the cat(s) out may improve things in the short term. If it does, have the tech check the PCV and EGR systems for proper operation. |
