I don't know what your GF's computer had on it but it most definitely wasn't a good example of XP. I actually found that XP runs faster then the same machine with win2000 on it both when tweaked for good speed, and when the machine has 192MB+ ram it is just as fast as 98se. Yes, even old sub 200Mhz machines. it just takes XP longer to start, but once that's done it's quite speedy when tuned properly.
