I'd be more concerned at the jacks compromised than the strings - amp is only source of bad electrickery, and jacks are mounted on scratchplate (thanks, Aria). So, thinking on it, jack case / nut is ground, so will automagically ground scratchplate.
Re tone - its a cheapish clapped out old aria, thats been stuck in loft for 12 years, so I ain't going to lose any sleep over that. Was most concerned about hum / noise using my hands as aerial contact as I touch scratchplate being induced into signal (esp as jacks mounted thereupon).
