I'm looking at a dell from the small office range	by astro-g	2007-07-10 05:06:32
for myself. The only problem with them is they don't seem to have an option for a 7200rpm hdd. Alternatively, you could go for an ASUS G1. (although, you might have trouble finding one without vista) Other than that, I'm generally a fan of Toshiba laptops. Compaq was good, but you can only get very expensive business machines from them now.
