I'm off to college and I'm gonna buy a laptop so by Talchas 2007-07-10 04:48:23
I'm looking for suggestions. I know what sort of stuff I want for the laptop, but I don't know anything about which companies people think are good or bad. I'm going to dual-boot linux/XP, so I don't mind paying the "MS tax" as long as its for XP. I'll probably be carrying it around in a backpack, so I'd rather have power than ultraportableness, in case that figures into which companies are good.

Also, is there hardware coming out in the near future which I'd want or would push down prices for the stuff I want?

The sorts of specs I'd like are:
Decent dual-core CPU
2 GB ram
XP professional (if it comes with windows)
CDRW/DVD or something in that range
Wireless of course, but whatever is best compatible with linux
Decent HD space, but I'm not gonna record video on this or anything
And a reasonable high res screen

Thanks for any tips you share.
