Include in the rent, the cost of laundry facilities (he can wash his own damn dirty underwear) and use of kitchen and utilities he should be responsible for his own long distance phone calls. This will teach him (hopefully) a) not to take you for granted, and b) a sense of financial responsibility. Use the money to either put back into household expensive, or into a savings to help him pay for his second year of University
