The article smacks of social Darwinism, which has largely been
discredited in anthropological circles.
One of the risks in any observation is that the observer
corrupts the data. Hence the rise of the double blind test.
How does this apply to this article.
The article has three major motives be popular, simple and informative.
The first two are important the third not so,
notice that being accurate is not part of the motives.
So human behavior which is complex, is trying to be represented
simply in a popular manner. The intended target has a major
influence on popularity.
Sex is always popular,
To paraphrase Chris Rock 'i can tell a dirty joke drunk,
a clean joke is much harder'
so a easy way to make an article simple and popular is to
boil everything down to sex. Accuracy and thoughtfulness
have a tendency to make an article larger and less snappy.
But trying to boil things down to a simple concept
will distort the data, again this is not necessarily
intentional, but it is unavoidable, add some simplistic
examples to fit the theories, more to fit the goals of
the article, than find the truth.
A few years ago I saw a news story about and genetic algorithms
a few years ago and the reporter goes 'Oh so computers are
having sex then!'. cringe factor nine.

I am a man according to the article i should find blonde women
with big breasts extremely attractive.
You might think i am an exception so i will go for the Japanese
who think red hair is the best, i also like red hair but for
me black is best.
why do suicide bombers exist in the middle east yet not on
Hainan island if it is caused by a disparity between female
and male counts?
why are they not in Malaysia a Muslim country?
why are there female suicide bombers?
I don't think the article addresses that.
Rajiv Ghandi was killed by a suicide bomber who was not
Muslim.
Suicide bombing is a very difficult subject to broach.
I come from a upper middle class background, in a community
with more females than males. I think to myself that it is
impossible for me to be a suicide bomber, i am sure that is
an incorrect assumption, I just do not know what could make
we want to do that, and personally i hope i never find out.
Why do educated women not have as many children as
non-educated women? regardless of availability of
contraception. If women are chasing resources purely
for the up keep of their children why does the presence of
resources reduce the number of children?
could it be that sex is cheap entertainment?
could frequency of sex influence the gender of children.
why are there exceptions to every rule.
I do not seek to imply that the author is being at all
dishonest, I have no real interest in finding out, this
article has more the feel of a quick pseudo-science.
Indeed it is probably written with the best of intentions.
However life isn't simple and isn't all about sex,
any article that tries to imply either is dubious. |
