With me it was:

You have two choices:
1) Go to college.
2) Go to college.

Well three choices: I could have let my father beat me senseless and then go to college.

I acted like a Buddhist and took the path of least resistance.

Before you condemn my father remember this: for Jews study is the highest honor and the highest thing to strive for. My father was merely more forceful because we came from a long line of peasants that he was the first college man of. Not going to college wasn't even a question. The only question was which college I would go to.
