As a [going into] 2nd year University student, I keep snacks in my bedroom, even at home. This is out of sheer laziness, as I don't want to get up and walk down the entire corridor when I can have them on hand, not an attempt to assert my independence or avoid my family. I'm not quite sure why it seems such a big deal (unless he's missing family meals to eat in his room or something). On the other hand it does seem highly suspicious that he's buying them himself. I have no idea why he'd want to buy his own food when he can get someone else to.
