Holy deitus interruptus! by hactar the uhhh2007-07-09 16:44:47
The outcome is hardly surprising. by werehatrack 2007-07-09 18:50:24
Some twenty-odd years ago, an acquaintance's wife went on a vacation trip to visit her mother. Neither the acquaintance or the wife would have been considered religious to any extent, but the wife's mother was rather remarkably so. The wife had said she'd be visiting for a few days. It stretched to a week, then two, then three, at which point the acquaintance asked her point blank when she was coming home. The reply was "I'll be there tomorrow, praise God!" On arrival (with her mother), the changes that had taken place during the three weeks of being with her mother were obvious and dramatic; this was not the same person that had left this house three weeks prior.

I won't go into needless detail; to make a long story short, the soon-to-be-ex-wife, who refused to entertain the idea of sleeping in her own house until her husband had Accepted Jesus (with attendant ritual and declarations), left with her mother a few days later. The divorce motion wasn't filed for more than six months; he had kept a small amount of hope alive that sanity would strike, which proved fruitless. When they last spoke (some ten years after the divorce, and a couple of years after the mother was supposedly out of the picture), the ex-wife's mind set had not reverted to what it had been before the visit to Mom.

He considered it fortunate that they'd had no children.

My point is that when a person has a dramatic personality shift, any expectations on the part of others that this shift will not cause re-evaluations of relationships are naive.

My other observation is that more breakups of families and couples that I have known have resulted from religious causes than any other single issue, and most of them came about as a result of one person's sudden adoption of an extreme stance as a result of religious indoctrination.

YMMV.
