terribly solid ground to begin with. Your friend loses points for breaking up with her over the phone. I'm not sure what "girlfriend of 1 year" means (usually after much less time than that I'm sharing a residence with my partners). Was this a committed, monogamous relationship? It might seem to me that an exploration of how serious the woman is about her change of attitude is in order. Or not. People break up for stupider reasons than these all the time.
