of some stats I read somewhere - I can't recall where - that said that well-fed mothers have a slightly higher chance of bearing daughters, while poorly-fed mothers have a slightly higher chance of bearing sons. The reasoning being, if you are poorly fed, your tribe needs more hunter-gatherers or warriors, while if you are well fed, it's time to expand the tribe with more childbearers.
