in that regard. What i wanted to say is, that the technology behind them is the same: Only the CPU is passed through the "virtualization", everything else is emulated, and introduces a *lot* of overhead (~30% performance loss).

If you just want to play with the guest systems (although I'd suggest playing with Xen in a VM, too, since it has all the neat stuff making (para)virtualization so neat, like live migrations), I'd suggest VMware Server (runs on Linux, too, BTW). Since it's free and has a relatively intuitive UI.
