ATTN Motor Ufies: Any tips? by buzzin2007-07-09 07:09:31
Know when to look away & Look them in the eyes by elbaz 2007-07-09 08:03:36
You have received a lot of good advice so far, the best is to seek out further training if offered in your area. In the states that would be a Motor Cycle Safety Foundation course (there are courses for experience riders also). Someone already mentioned this but it is worth repeating. Now for my advice:

There are two things that every rider needs to know:

The first thing goes to a problem that is called "target locking.” This is when you focus on the thing you don't want to hit and because you are focused on it you hit it anyway. You have the tendency to go where you look (this is an important point in of it self) in a panic situation you have a tendency to look at the thing you don’t want to hit. This is a kind of feed back loop. Too break it you need to look away from the thing you don’t want to hit. This is not as easy as it sounds but with practice you will come up with way to deal with these situations. For me it is to force my self to blink.

The second one is the best way to get someone’s attention (the driver about to turn into your path) is to stare into their eyes. It may sound strange but I'm sure you have been in a situation you realize someone is staring at you without you even looking. The same applies here. Someone also said that you need to identify your escape root, which is always true; this is just one more way to try to keep from having to use the escape root but does not always work, I had an old lady stair straight at my eyes and still turn in front of me. I was ready for it and managed to miss her car despite her best efforts.

Good luck and enjoy the freedom.
