the Internet? I don't believe there is any guarantee of that. And my employer strictly prohibits its employees from sending confidential information outside via e-mail.

On the other hand, installing anything on someone's computer without knowledge or consent is definitely not kosher - no matter what that program does. Even if it just keeps track of your IP address, or counts seconds, or any other seemingly innocuous activity.
