ATTN Motor Ufies: Any tips? by buzzin2007-07-09 07:09:31

Slit drains in the road surface, the grating on drawbridges, wide cracks running nearly or fully parallel to your path, patches of loose gravel or leaves, and roads with a deep rut in the surface can all make the bike squirrelly in both dry and wet conditions; in the wet, the list expands more or less logically with the worst offender in this area being steel plates temporarily covering construction holes. Road conditions that won't cause a problem for a car may put a bike on its side. Also, be aware that in a panic stop, many motorcycles can develop enough front traction to do an endo.

The number one hazard to cyclists, however, is car drivers who don't pay attention when changing lanes, closely followed by those who habitually tailgate or pull in front of bikes much more closely than they would do to a car or truck; vigilance is required to a far greater extent when on two wheels. If you're passing a car whose driver in taking on a cell phone, be particularly alert as they are vastly more likely to do something dangerously careless or stupid. NEVER run along in a driver's blind spot. Don't expect the Harley custom of "running with load pipes so that they'll notice you" to be effective; it's really not.

Good luck.
