you chose to use a commercial product, albeit one based on open-source building blocks. As was to be expected from a profit-oriented organization, they contrived to make their product sufficiently non-standard that it becomes a nightmare to try to modify it yourself.

If you are so dissatisfied with MailCleaner that you are seriously thinking of doing that kind of hacking, this seems to imply that they have not responded in a satisfactory manner to your requests for bug fixes or new features.

Bottom line: you might want to shop around for a replacement spam filter, and possibly make "uses only standard open-source building blocks installed in standard locations" one of the filter criteria by which to pick the replacement...

Only MHO, of course...
