...would be able to afford to buy a house instead of rent, with the difference? Or contribute to a retirement fund, and rely LESS on the government in their old age? (the majority of money spent on indigent care here is actually on nursing homes). Or actually cross that line where they don't have to rely on government aid programs, and can stand on their own?

How many home-maker spouses would find it economically worthwhile to enter the workforce again? Or do you think the spouses of wealthy people should stay out of the workforce, because they're somehow "taking away" jobs from people who "need them more"?
