As I understand, romandas was advocating a flate tax rate, not a set amount of tax per person. If it's 20% for everybody, that's pretty fair (subject to a basic untaxed standard deduction). But if it comes to 40% for the "rich," he's arguing that's not fair. You'd be a fool to believe that people don't think twice about putting in the effort toward that money that'd get taxed at the higher rate. There are going to be some that will refuse to put in that extra work, and the government will get $0 of extra revenue, when it could've gotten 20% had they just left the tax rate flat.
