As I recall, the flat tax proposals included a much higher standard deduction than we currently have now. So a higher portion of your pay would not be taxed at all.

I don't mind a *slightly* progressive tax system. If you make the tax rates too high though (I realize this is subjective), you penalize people for working hard and taking risks. Arguing that "they don't need it as much" is just class envy. Waah, waah. If you do eveer have the good fortune to fully use your degree, I suspect you'll change your tune once you do your first tax return working a "real" job.
